Overview
Nyerere National Park, formerly known as Selous Game Reserve, is Tanzania’s largest protected area, covering approximately 30,000 square kilometers. Located in southern Tanzania, it offers an expansive wilderness of rivers, woodlands, wetlands, and savannahs. As one of Africa’s most significant conservation areas and a UNESCO World Heritage site, Nyerere provides exceptional opportunities for pristine wildlife viewing in a vast, untouched environment.
Location & Landscape
Nyerere National Park stretches across the Rufiji River basin and includes extensive floodplains, miombo woodlands, riverine forests, and lakes. Its diverse ecosystems support a wide range of species and make it one of Tanzania’s richest wildlife areas. The Rufiji River, Tanzania’s largest, runs through the park, providing vital water sources for animals and supporting vibrant aquatic life.
Wildlife Highlights
The park hosts large populations of elephants, buffalo, lions, leopards, African wild dogs, hippos, and crocodiles. It is renowned for its impressive sightings of large herds of buffalo and elephants, as well as predators that thrive in the diverse habitats. Nyerere is also famous for its birdlife, with over 440 bird species recorded, including African finfoot, Pel’s fishing owl, and the rare shoebill stork.
