Overview
Mount Meru: Tanzania’s Hidden Gem and Kilimanjaro’s Majestic Neighbor
Mount Meru, rising to 4,566 meters (14,980 feet), is Tanzania’s second-highest peak and a breathtaking stratovolcano located in Arusha National Park, just 70 kilometers west of Mount Kilimanjaro. Often overshadowed by its taller sibling, Meru is a spectacular mountain in its own right, offering challenging trekking, dramatic scenery, rich biodiversity, and far fewer crowds—making it a perfect destination for both acclimatization before Kilimanjaro or as a stand-alone adventure.
Climbing Mount Meru is a rewarding 3–4-day trek through lush montane forests, alpine meadows, and narrow ridgelines that provide heart-stopping views into the crater and across the Great Rift Valley. The trail leads trekkers past fig tree forests, waterfalls, and wildlife including giraffes, buffaloes, baboons, and occasionally elephants. The final ascent is done in the early morning hours via a narrow rocky ridge that rewards climbers with a sunrise view over Kilimanjaro—an unforgettable experience.

Climate and Conditions
Meru’s climate varies by elevation. The base starts warm and humid, shifting to cool montane forests, and finally alpine chill and winds at the summit. Rainfall is common from March to May and in November, so the best climbing months are June to early March, especially in the dry seasons of July–October and December–February.
